I'm getting in the habbit of looking at other's codes and using them as a reference to create my own...is this a bad thing? Should I be doing them from scratch alone?

No, it's not really a bad habit. If you still consider yourself a beginner (?) at coding, then those codes are guidelines to your learning. But let's put it this way. If you can create scripts from scratch (big ones) then you shouldn't.

lol, tottally not bad thing
thats how i made all of my first scripts, is by peicing together other things
as long as your trying to learn it, and recognize whats it's doing
